Thames Christmas Party

Information

One of the most famous and well known rivers in the world is the river Thames. At 215 miles long (346 km) the river runs straight through the city of London, England’s capital.

Due to the river running right through the centre of London it has 104 bridges, 29 bridges across the tidal part and 75 across the non tidal parts. The river is very tidal with a 7 meter (23 ft) difference low and high tide, for this reason the river Thames very rarely freezes over. However it has done so on various occasions earliest that was recorded was in 1150 AD.

You can travel down the river on barges for 191 miles (306 km) and in the main part of the river in central London you can get boat hire on the Thames which will allow you to see the sights from the river. The rivers flood plain is 896 km2 and to control the flow of the river so it does not flood it has 47 locks.
